For quite sometime I have been thinking about what leads different cultures to be so different. The differentiation aspects can be many but right now I am focused about family aspect of each culture and also its relation with the surrounding society. A lot is dependent on economic condition of a country. One thing is very common. If economic condition of a country is not so good, people try to live in groups. Living in groups means more security and also less vulnerability. And this directly proportionates to having families, believing in family values; as in case something bad happens to one individual, someone will be there to support him/her.
When you talk about groups and families, society implicitly comes into picture. You are more concerned then - what other people think about you. For instance, in India, if you have crossed a certain age, people will keep on asking why aren't you getting married. These pressures automatically keep on building. Sometimes your each action is judged by the people across the society and you just can't avoid them. So if there are some good things living as a part of society there are bad parts too. However living in groups, having family culture encourages and builds on cultural aspects, values etc. I think to maintain the sanctity of this culture they are required too. Economically less developed also means less number of employments which also means that people have a lot of time to think about others. It's always told that a blank mind is a house of Satan and that's true in this case. Gossips spread and people have a lot of things to talk about others.
On the other hand, if you belong to an economically developed country, you no longer require a group. You even will not be aware who your neighbour is. The same doesn't hold true when you live in society based culture. Your actions are not judged anymore. You may be living in a corner of a building and nobody bothers what you do unless they are getting affected by your actions. People don't need a joint (big) family anymore. They are so involved with their life that they don't have any time for other individual. You are then more individualistic who always thinks about yourself. Unless you have a good system to support with, older people are left in lurch in their later part of life and sometimes nobody cares about their well-being. Also now, people don't care about their roots as basically they no longer are aware about them. The ethics and values which a society based culture encourages start to lose their sheen as the communication which keep on happening in a group-based-society from older generation to younger generation doesn't seem to happen anymore frequently.
I have seen this pattern for some of the countries so far. Poland, which was not as much economically developed encouraged the group based culture. Similar things I have heard about Estonia also. The same holds true to India also. These days, India is in transition phase. If you see the people living in Metro cities, they are getting more and more financial independent thanks to the many economic liberalization policies adopted by Indian government. Families are becoming more and more nuclear these days because of lack of employment near to their towns and also because younger generation doesn't need older people anymore. Sometimes they are needed but most of the times they are needed to take care their kids as office going couple may not have a luxury to have full time nanny. System still doesn't support the social security to older people and they are left on their own when people no longer need them. I have already seen many such examples where it happened and nothing seem to work for older people.
So you know what, culture is already is in transition phase towards prosperity but I don't think system is still prepared for it or even thinking in that direction. One more result is - people are less aware about their culture, ethics and values as they are no longer passed from generation to generation. I am still trying to think if it's still possible to survive for all those values, ethics and cultural aspects even while living in this environment. From my own experience I have found that it may be possible but one needs to make continuous and conscious efforts with a lot of communication and visits to make it work. Most of the people who are comfortable in their own way of living may not find time/efforts for all these things. And in that way, you normally find the decline of the cultural aspects.
For those who are wondering what exactly Swadhyay is, it is the path to self-development: Swa = self, Adhyay = lesson. Learning about your self.. or self-development. I hope that this blog will be useful. Visitors, please leave your comments.

The Lost Timeless Moments
Recently when I was traveling with a Bus, I happened to hear an interesting conversation. The conversation was in native language and people were sharing jokes. The articulation of those jokes was wonderful and really hilarious. The situations and circumstances that guy was sharing were quite local but they had ethnic taste which may not be available anywhere else. Those dialogues were unheard, never recorded or documented ever and I am sure, will never get recorded/archived.
That time, I realized the value of the lost timeless moments. Sometimes I think the kind of childhood I (for that matter, my generation) enjoyed, may not be available to the current generation. Those small pleasures like making a paper boat and let it flow in the rainwater and running behind it wherever it goes, the pleasure of being half-naked and running around in the rain-water, sitting along with my mother in a chilled winter night in the kitchen besides "chullha" and blowing the air on fire with an iron pipe ("phoonkni"), sleeping on a "charpai" in a summer night on a village street and so on.
Some of it is lost and some will be lost in the coming time. Nobody will know those small pleasures ever. Similarly, ever wondered how people in India or for that matter anywhere in the world used to live before 500 years ago. What were their circumstances, living styles, problems, limitations and small pleasures they lived for. Nobody knows how the court of Akbar really looked like at that time. How he looked like, how he behaved, what about his Navratnas and things like that. We may cherish the celluloid version of Akbar's life but in reality the situation and circumstances could be entirely different. Whatever is documented are praises for the invader or emperor. The real social scenario and behavioral aspects are lost somewhere which can never be tracked now. So you know what, many of those timeless aspects are lost forever.

The tunnel of darkness
The situation which I am going to discuss now happens to every individual at some point of life. But reaction varies from person to person. Here I am talking about bad phases. What happens when a person faces problems, problems and problems day by day. One problem followed by another problem and then yet another. It seems endless and it may eat up days, months, years or even decades also.Fatigue of these problems start to take a toll on the person after a period of time. He may get crumbled. He may get overpowered too. That person start to question the authenticity of right and wrong. He begins to find shortcuts. Somehow he wants to end this situation to continue forever. As the darkness means an unknown path, these shortcuts do not have definite fate. Even if they succeed somehow to take course of shortcuts, how long they are going to survive in a marathon of life is any body's guess only. You may say that may be after a period of time, if they happen to find a right path, they may again survive. But as I said, the result is unknown. This kind of uneasiness creates frustration and may lead to many questions. One of the most frequently asked is - when will it end. You know what - I have seen a pattern in that and that's what I am going to discuss here.
This phase is analogous to the tunnel of darkness. When you are inside a tunnel of darkness you will not be able to see even your both hands. You don't know where this tunnel will lead to as you don't know the path. The path is unknown. And guess what - unknown means - something which is not known. Even in your hidden sense you don't know what it is. So the bad phase can be considered as a tunnel of darkness. Bad phase cannot be defined in terms of time for a person. It varies from individual to individual. You might have seen in your practical experience that for some people the bad phase may continue for years, say for 10 years or who knows for entire life also. Sometimes it's for a month or so and sometimes for an year. But the whole point is - nobody knows how long it's going to continue. It's like a stock market where nobody is sure when a bull/bear run is going to end. Everybody can predict but nobody knows for sure. That's a big trouble you know. What should I do in this case as an individual, is a big question mark which many of the times people pose and they may not find an answer.
Now let's take an instance. A person is inside this tunnel. He is frustrated as he doesn't know where to go but is not hopeless. He tries to find a way. He plans his moves and see if this way of that way lead to the exit of tunnel somehow. Nobody knows if he'll ever succeed. But irrespective of the result, he keeps on trying, trying and trying. Some day his continuous efforts bear the fruit and he's able to find the end-point/exit of the tunnel. You may say - so what nobody's sure if he'll ever succeed. That's true, nobody knows. But irrespective of any results he's busy in making efforts. Result is the fruit of long term continuous efforts and he keeps on doing just that on day to day basis. If you look around, you will find success is just the name of sustained efforts even in the dark phase irrespective of result.
Let's take another scenario. Another person who is stuck in the tunnel somehow gets hopeless, utterly frustrated and demotivated because he doesn't know the end of it. He resigns and leave it at the hand of fate and time. Sometimes, time come for the rescue and he finds the exit in a rare case but most of times he dies. In terms of dark phase, he is swallowed by it. He begins to take illegitimate actions which may not be fruitful for him in long term. With experience I have seen that people who puts their efforts continuously without thinking end result succeed in finding exit point and they become successful in the long run also. Bad phase provides opportunity of sort for people. We begin to understand the value of good people at that time. You also begin to find out real jewels in the crowd of so many fake stones. You begin to appreciate tiny amount of pleasures of your life.
So my learning about dark phase is - one should not lose heart just because she/he can's see the exit point. One has to keep going and make sustained effort. It's like stock market yet again where people who are busy in short-term gains become the victims of volatile nature of the market. People who concentrate on the basics of a stock and don't get carried away with rumours and short-term loss/gain taste success in the long run.

Astrology vs human pscychology - A question
The question is about astrology vs human pscychology. Some people do things only after consulting with their astrologer. Right now, certainly, I am not discussing about the validity of the astrology. It can be a separate thread of discussion. However, sometimes, I realised that the observations made by astrologer become true and that in some way vindicates the people's reliance on astrology for their day-to-day activities.
Now the question is even bigger. Whether the conscience of the human should be given a chance or because of the uncertainity about the future or fear of unknown, present should be sacrificed. Sometimes, everything else looks really good but just because of the astrology, people don't go ahead in that direction. I still vividly remember a discussion with an astrologer who said that it's only human who can change his destiny. Every other creature in this world has a pre-defined destiny according to astrology.
One can think about a child who wants to learn walking. Because of the fear of failure, he will never be able to learn walking. Definitely he will stumble in between, but he will learn walking by making those mistakes. In my view it's a similar case of human's relation with astrology too. I think one should rely on one's conscience and decide the difference between right and wrong.
One way of thinking is: the astrologer can tell something but somehow he's not god and whatever he's saying is not the last word. It's better to take the decision based on what you see and feel from a third angle. It's important not to get too involved in the event and instead decide based on all pros and cons about an event.
Any other comments are most welcome.

Heart vs Mind
In indian society, most of the times, we are worried what others think about us. What he/she will say if I do something. Or what will be the reaction of family/friends etc. In this process we tend to forget what we really want from ourselves. But in my view this is a very important point. You want to do something which might make other person happy. If you are clear in your conscience with whatever you are doing, other people really dont come in the picture. Do whatever good your heart says to do.
Most of times we dont listen to our soft feelings which our heart asks us to do. Mind overpowers our feelings, dont you think. You will think that I can help this/that guy but your mind will start thinking that ...hey this guy didnt help me that time or...what will I get in return if I help him...Your heart says that you should help him but mind plays game. In process those soft feelings are lost somewhere.

We and Information
Did you ever notice the information bombardment or overflow? Most of us will start thinking if that's a case with them ever. Umm...We are trapped, but we dont know. It's about information flow which in many cases creates a bad impact on today's youth. Have you ever tried to think if you need the amount of information we receive these days.
I am talking about the information we receive from TV, Cinema, Newspapers etc. To get informed is always good. World is huge. Even if we try the way we could, we won't even be aware about a small drop in sea in our whole lifetime. That's the amount of information we have in this universe. At the same time, do we need to know all information we are presented with? Here I am talking about the violance, illicit scenes. Some TV serials whose existence itself is based on extra-marital affairs or the querrels between relatives. So much negative waves associated, don't you think? Do we ever need it? In my view, viewer is like a small child who doesn't know what to see and what not. He will see whatever is presented to him. Many of the related things don't depend upon his discretion. People are addicted to it. They see because that has become the part of their life. Whether they like it or not doesnt matter much. However whatever they see does impact their mentality which they even dont know.
They become violent. It's not the violence in explicit terms but the violence in thoughts. One is jealous with another, or one doesn't hesitate to use another for money/sex. Illicit sexual advancements are becoming acceptable somehow. Why is that? In the end, the question comes up whether we really need the kind of information we are offered to. Why can't we simply stop and start living in hibernation for quite some time. From my personal experience I can tell you that this is really worth to experiment. For that quite sometime you feel like living in a different world. Also you are able to devote more time to the things which you might be missing in your life.

System vs Person
System is very flexible and creates the space for everyone. Life does not appear to be a straight line. Most of the times it happens only in movies that a bad guy is always punished. In real life, bad guys prosper. Ironically system leaves space for them. 'Good' guys take reverse turn to give more space for the powerful. Every person plays a character in this play. In the indian society, social bonds are enormous. Because of that, sometimes, persons who don't perform, become the responsibilty of their near and dears. This social umbrella looks good at its very first sight. In some means it also is. It gives social security to a commoner. However every good thing has its black spots too.
And in this case, a person who does not perform.... The helplessness in a male dominated society becomes a curse for women. Good things dont prosper always. And in this case many good souls die without saying anything.

Priyanka
The question is, whether somebody needs to be extraordinary in some of the defined disciplines. The personality cannot be defined in some well defined curricatures. A small town girl could create such an impact on distant guests that after going from here they just remembered one name, that is Priyanka. That friend even started to think for naming his new composition (the emotions for which were derived from the visit) as Priyanka. Hmm...I started to take notice. What is it all about. A very ordinary conventional girl could create such an impact. And it was all without any predefined notions about a great personality. The human warmth, the sensitivity, the hospitality and the zeal to convey those raw emotions without any hesitation and that too after knowing that they wont be able to understand her language was simply mindblowing for sometime. So, looking into that profile one would just start thinking that the girl has a great future...But..does she really have it???

A Letter
Came to know your circumstances.
I am sure, it must be an unfortunate news for you.
All I can only say right now is, something was missing because of which it could not materialise.
Actually I am not from a school of thought which says it happened because of sheer bad luck.
Everything is in our hands.
So, just be patient.
And I don't think that this is an end of the story.
Life goes on. Just have faith on yourself.
I believe that 'Whatever happens, happens only for good".
Every disaster can just show you numerous paths (options) which are unexplored.
Right now, you are just thinking in terms of MBA.
But do you think, being an MBA (or not) is the end of world.
World is full of oppurunities, many - 2 unexplored ones.
And, if you just believe in yourself, you can lead to an unexplored path which can give you much better satisfaction than MBA>>>>>
Why Krishna says 'Just do your Karma as the fruit is not in your hand".
Because Trishna (desire) gives sheer pain, nothing else.
Why don't you think, that whatever I did was in my capacity. If it did not materialise, so be it...There are many other options.
Aur bhagya ke oopar agar lagataar kudaal chalate rahoge, to aakhir kab tak ichchit fal nahin milega.
So, what I would like to say is to be prepared with another task.
Just concentrate on yourself. Things that you can do in better way.
Also on your strengths and your limitations.
This part is very - very important.
Try to see if the task is too difficult (where probability of being successful is very less). If it is, you'll have to remember that there might be a chance of failure too.
You can try your best. But the probable might not always be a success. So be prepare for that.
And then its later course of action. What if it is not successful.
But to be on the safer side, my advice is always to recognize your strong points, weaker points and limitations too.
Don't do anything which is outside your capabilities.
Everybody is not perfact. Some people excell in something and others in something else.
So, a Dhiru Bhai Ambani was a Matric fail, but was a genius in business and business relationships.
Amitabh Bachchan was a total failure upto an age of 29-31 and became a genius only in later days.
So, your age is not end of the road.
Just try to see your options.
Think about them and venture on them
Just have a faith on yourself.

Sthitpragya darshan - my experience
Today I will talk about a 'darshan (philosophy)' which you need the most at this moment. This Darshan has been taken from Geeta and is called 'Sthitpragya Darshan' There can be many interpretation of this. But here is what what I felt from my own experience. The person who remains the same in the moments of 'Sukh (joy)' and 'Dukh (sorrow)' is called Sthitpragya. Woh in cheejon se pare hota hai (He is outside of any defined definitions).
Lets talk about a real scenario
The world is full of evil. Isn't it. Let's accept it
Evil cannot be defined in terms of a person or a creed
It can be inside each individual. Whenever time and circumstances prevails, aadmi ka ganda chehra dikhayee dene lagta hai (we see the evil face of the human)
Another scenario...
There are people who do the bad things...most of the times
In real life you will see them as problem creators... people who feel jealous from another, using people for sex or money.
As a matter of fact you will see them as negative waves which might hurt a lot ...a lot
And you will be pondering on those...why did he do that and then it can cause depression too. Like...why dont they accept my own identity or why did he/she said such things to me.
Some persons dont know what they are doing
as their whole life is involved in such bad things
you cannot change them. Period.
Then question arise whats the solution...
They are going to do what they are doing...forever
Hmm...now, how do we care for ourselves...
The solution is to feel mercy on them...
Sometimes we have to consider them as pscychological patients who need mercy than hatred. Lets accept the truth.
They are not going to change
They will keep on sending their negative waves as they dont know what they are doing. And you cannot change them too.
So...how to deal with these negative waves...
One solution is...to take them as they come...which most often people do
They take these negative waves on their heart and in that process get hurt
even if they know...that person is like that only.
We try to become brave...and try to let it come on the heart
the result is the destruction and it shows when person gets hurt...
and goes into a shell
The question is....is it possible to change 'poison' to amrit
The negative waves remain negative...even if you try to analyse them from different angles..
So...becoming brave and taking these nagative waves at heart....is not a solution....
The solution is to avoid them....
let them go....and duck these waves
and keep on sending positive waves
Sthipragya person is like Sun
who keeps on sending positive waves...
without interruption
continuosly
who always tries to think something positive for others....
even if those people...try to do something bad to him
He...avoids their negative waves....
but keep on sending the positive waves...
without any interruption :-)
thinking....that they are doing what they are supposed to do
and i am doing...what i am supposed to do
in process...it might happen...that those people might change....
Those negative waves are satiated with their positive waves...
because har ek evil mein bhee human angle hota hai (as every evil person has a human angle too)
and that might turn on when he just gets love...even in response of hatred.
So my dear Friend!
Try to become Sthitpragya
You might say...That its not practical
and its not possible for human
I think everything is possible
we try to give excuses to ourselves...
and dont even try for it
door se kaaphi saari cheejein...difficult dikhayee deti hain
par jaise-2 paas aao...
aur un par amal karna shuru karo
wahi cheejein....
aasaan lagne lagti hain
Jo karneeya hai....
wahi karne ka hai (From very far most of the things looks difficult.
But as you come near to them...start practising them...they become easier. You have to do whatever is supposed to be done.)
Think about it
Lets talk about a real scenario
You have to do whatever is supposed to be done.)

random thoughts
Something stereotypical personality might seem normal but you know these days its difficult to find normalcy. People strive to find that state of mind. It's apparent by seeing current trend of relations when people are experimenting with them endlessly but going nowhere. Once upon a time, relationships and even marriages were just the part of life, like a normal flow where person is oblivious with the fact that this is a piece in which something abnormal can occur ever and would concentrate his/her energy into something which is constructive. Now, people and their personalities are overshadowed with the turmoil errupting in their life. I dont know who is responsible for that and how did we come to such a state. I am still trying to analyse it. Meeting new people and learning from their experiences.
One more thing I have observed about relationships. We go with the looks and physical appearance initially. But does it matter at all in the coming time. For example 5-6 years later. They wont remember and wont see whether the person is fat, bald or anything else. He/she just becomes the part of life. And we experience them with how do we feel about them not how do they look. For example, did you ever try to observe the physical looks of your father. I believe, he is just a father to you. You wouldnt have even tried to analyse it also. When you think about him, you think about his behaviour, his care towards you and your love towards him. Similarly it happens to other relationships too. Attraction plays its role initially but in later stages it becomes much more important how do they behave in real life.
